Community Grants
The National Asthma Community Grants Program for 2005 is an initiative funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and administered by the Asthma Foundation of WA. It aims to build capacity and sustainability within communities and organisations to take key messages associated with best practice asthma management into the community, increasing knowledge and active participation in the appropriate management of asthma. A secondary aim is to promote a team approach to asthma management by increasing the awareness of families, carers health and allied health professionals of their role in supporting those with asthma. Information about the Australian Government's program of work in this area can be obtained from http://www.health.gov.au/pq/asthma/index.htm.
Projects funded must align with Commonwealth, Asthma Foundation or National Asthma Council of Australia best practice or self management principles:
- Asthma is a potentially serious condition which can be managed;
- Studies have shown that people with asthma who work in partnership with health providers are better able to minimise their asthma symptoms and improve their quality of life;
- See your doctor when you are well so that a preventive or proactive approach can be developed;
- Know what to do in an asthma emergency; and
- Asthma medication needs to be reviewed with your GP on a regular basis.
