Twenty-year-old swimmer  Ryan Napoleon has been reinstated into the Australian swimming team for the Commonwealth Games in October.

He had been suspended for three months after taking an asthma inhaler that was on the banned list and had been incorrectly labelled.

According to Swimming Australia, Ryan has always had asthma and had taken Pulmicort for most of his life. However, on one occasion Symbicort had been wrongly labelled by a pharmacist as Pulmicort. Symbicort contains formoterol, which is on the banned list of medications for elite athletes.

But on appeal his suspension was brought forward, so that the ban came to an end earlier this week.

"When I found out the news it was overwhelming," Ryan told the ABC.

"I'm very happy, very shocked obviously."

While it was found that he was not at fault for a pharmacist’s error in incorrectly labelling medication, the ban was imposed because it was found that he should have been fully aware of the medication he was taking.

The anti-doping agency of FINA (the international governing body for swimming), said it was clear that Ryan had no intention of enhancing his sports performances in taking the wrong medication.

Ryan will compete in the 400m and 1500m events in Delhi.
