The Asthma Foundation New South Wales’ fundraising ambassador Michael Cowan has been recognised for his efforts by being awarded the World Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year.

Michael first raised money for the Asthma Foundation of NSW in 2007 when he undertook a unicycle ride. After the fundraising and media success of this event, he announced that he would build and ride a penny farthing 1000km around the state.

Twelve months later Michael completed an ambitious journey, riding from Newcastle to Orange via Sydney and Canberra in just seven days.

On a penny farthing, a bike with no suspension or brakes, it was a stunning achievement and testimony to his determination not to let asthma rule his life.

As a teenager, Michael’s football coach suggested he quit because of his asthma.

But Michael, who was diagnosed with asthma at the age of three, said that he realised early on that if he learnt to control his asthma he could achieve anything. His coach’s comments drove him to excel at many sports, including football, cycling, running and sailing.

Michael’s unicycle and penny farthing rides have raised nearly $100,000 for asthma education and research.

When he was crowned the inaugural World Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year, his excitement got the better of him.

“The world stood still,” he said.

“Every sound sounded muffled and distant. I made my way to the stage like I had just won an Oscar shaking hands and kissing complete strangers. What an amazing night.

"I want to thank the crew from the Asthma Foundation NSW... who have been like family members to me.

“This award is based solely on team work and you guys are a major part of my team.”

The ceremony, which took place in the Netherlands this week, was a world first for international fundraising awards.
