This information sheet lists medications that may aggravate asthma symptoms in some people.

There are a number of medications available that can aggravate asthma.  The medications are usually those which contain aspirin as well as medications taken for heart disease, hypertension, blood pressure and eye concerns.  Not everyone with asthma is sensitive to these medications. However their use should be discussed with your doctor.

Approximately 2% of people with asthma are allergic to aspirin.  The following medications contain aspirin:

The following medications are Non- Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID’s) which may have an effect on asthma: 

·      Ibuprofen (Brufen, Nurofen, Rafen, ACT-3)

·      Naproxen (Naprosyn,

·      Ketoprofen (Orudis)

·      Indomethacin (Indocid, Arthrexin)

·      Sulindac (Clinoril, Aclin)

·      Diclofenac (Voltaren, Fenac)

·      Mefenamic Acid (Ponstan, Mefic)

·      Phenlybutazonc (Butazolidin)

·      Piroxicam (Feldene)

·      Diflunisal (Dolobid)

·      Tenoxicam (Tilcotil)

·      Ketorolac (Toradol)

·      Tiaprofenic Acid (Surgam)

 

Beta blockers are commonly used to control high blood pressure and may have an effect on asthma:

·      Alprenolol (Aptin)

·      Atenolol (Noten, Tenormin)

·      Labetalol (Trandatc, Presolol)

·      Metoprolol (Betaloc, Lopressor, Minax)

·      Oxprenolol (Corbeton)

·      Pindolol (Barbloc, Visken)

·      Propranolol (Inderal, Deralin)

·      Sotalol (Soctacor)

·      Timolol (Blocadren)

 

The following medications are beta blocker eye drops (for Glaucoma) which can affect asthma

·      Timolol(Timoptol, Tenopt)

Ace inhibitors are commonly used to control high blood pressure and may produce a dry cough similar to an asthma symptom.
